NASWA Board of Directors Meeting

December 12 - December 13, 2013
New Orleans, LA

2013 Equal Opportunity in the Workforce System Training Meeting

October 30 - November 01, 2013

On October 30th through November 1st, NASWA’s Equal Opportunity (EO) Committee hosted Equal Opportunity in the Workforce System, an event held in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) on Equal Opportunity issues in the workforce and unemployment insurance systems.

The purpose of the two-and-a-half day meeting, attended by local, state and federal officials, was to provide an opportunity for state and local staff with EO responsibilities to hear from top U.S. Department of Labor and other Federal agency officials on equal opportunity issues affecting the workforce and UI systems and the economy as a whole.

Leaders from USDOL’s Civil Rights Center (CRC), Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and Office of Federal Contractor Compliance Programs (OFCCP) highlighted initiatives underway in their offices to promote inclusion of persons with disabilities into the workforce. Additionally, representatives from the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Justice spoke to members on efforts to promote disability employment.

Attendees also participated in several training workshops on the second day covering diversity in the workplace, compliance monitoring, disability accommodation policies, along with other topics relating to Equal Opportunity in accessing workforce and unemployment insurance services.

2013 USDOL National Unemployment Insurance Tax Conference

September 16 - September 18, 2013

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (Department) Office of Unemployment Insurance sponsored a National UI Tax Conference bringing together state staff who are responsible for the administration of the UI tax program and Federal staff responsible for the oversight of these programs. This conference is an important national forum to discuss current UI tax issues, exchange ideas to enhance UI tax programs, and showcase innovative tax programs and practices. The 2013 conference included a broad range of topics, including Unemployment Trust Fund (UTF) solvency, UTF borrowing rules and requirements, information technology consortia, SUTA dumping, worker misclassification issues, the Effective Audit Measure, Tax Performance System initiatives, UI tax automation and technology, and enhanced tax enforcement.

2013 NASWA Winter Policy Forum

February 21 - February 22, 2013

NASWA’s 2013 Winter Policy Forum in Washington, D.C. February 21-22, 2013 is being held with the World Association of Public Employment Services’ (WAPES) Conference on Long-Term Unemployment.  WAPES is a membership association of administrators of workforce programs around the world.  This is the first such partnership meeting in NASWA's 76-year history.

Helping develop the agenda and secure speakers for the conference are the Local Economic and Employment Development Programme of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), as well as DirectEmployers, NASWA’s partner in the National Labor Exchange and US.jobs.  The conference will include plenary sessions on international economic and workforce development topics, followed by concurrent workshop panels organized into three tracks: panels offering international perspectives on long-term and youth unemployment; US policy panels; and panels with an employer perspective.

NASWA’s Winter Policy Forum and the WAPES Conference on Long-Term Unemployment are expected to draw over 200 attendees, most notably NASWA members in the United States and WAPES members from countries around the world, including Europe, Asia and the Americas.  Some members of the United States business and policymaking communities also will attend.
