Congress Passes Debt Limit Extension
On Wednesday, February 11, the Senate passed the Temporary Debt Limit Extension Act (S. 540), suspending the debt limit until March 15, 2015, without additional policy provisions. S.540 passed the Senate chamber along a party-line vote of 55-43 in favor of the measure, with Senators voting in a procedural measure prior to the final passage to end debate on the bill along a 67-31 vote, with 12 members of the Senate Minority joining all members of the Senate Majority.
USDOL Deputy Labor Secretary and ETA Assistant Secretary Nominees Testify before Senate HELP Committee
On Tuesday, February 11, the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) held a confirmation hearing for the President’s nominees for the Deputy Secretary of Labor and Assistant Secretary for Employment and Training.
Senator Ron Wyden Becomes New Senate Committee on Finance Chairman, First Agenda Item will be Extension of Expired Tax Provisions
Earlier this week, on Wednesday, February 12, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) became Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, replacing long-serving Chairman Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT), who departed from the Committee a week before after being confirmed as the United States’ Ambassador to China.
Construction Industry Pledges 100,000 Jobs for Veterans at USDOL Symposium
On Monday, February 10, U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) Secretary Tom Perez along with First Lady Michelle Obama announced at USDOL headquarters a broad coalition of construction employers and associations have collectively pledged to hire 100,000 veterans over the next five years. The event, A National Symposium: Veterans' Employment in Construction was hosted by USDOL and the Joining Forces initiative headed by Mrs. Obama.
