Senate Fails to Move WOTC Extension Forward
On Thursday, May 15, the Senate failed to get 60 votes to stop debate and vote on the Expiring Provisions Improvement Reform and Efficiency (EXPIRE) Act (S. 2260), a bill that would extend a number of expired tax credits for two years, including the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC).
USDOL Announces Availability of $53 million from Workforce Innovation Fund
On Wednesday, May 14, the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) announced the availability of up to $53 million in grants through the Workforce Innovation Fund (WIF), a grant initiative designed by U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL) to improve the delivery of employment and training services.
States Collect more than $290 million through Treasury Offset Program
The U.S. Department of Treasury recently released its 11th newsletter on the Treasury Offset Program’s (TOP) Unemployment Insurance Program initiative. The initiative collects UI debt from federal income tax refunds an individual owes due to fraud or a person’s failure to report wages while collecting unemployment benefits. For UI taxes, only unpaid UI employer taxes attributable to a sole proprietor or partners can be submitted for offset to the IRS.
Unemployment Insurance Initial Claims Decrease, Continued Claims Decrease
The U.S. Department of Labor reported for the week ending May 10, 2014, seasonally adjusted unemployment insurance initial claims decreased from the previous week’s revised figure.
