On October 29-30, 2013, the NASWA Veterans Affairs Committee met in Providence, Rhode Island, for its first meeting of the 2013-2014 Association year. The meeting opened with an introduction and welcome by NASWA’s Veterans Affairs Committee Chair, Charles Fogarty, Director of the Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training.The Committee was welcomed by Rhode Island Governor Lincoln Chafee, who noted the important work of the NASWA Veterans Affairs Committee in supporting our returning service members across the country.

States Collect more than $326 million in Unemployment Compensation Payments through Treasury Offset Program in FY2013
The U.S. Department of Treasury recently released its ninth newsletter on the Treasury Offset Program’s (TOP) Unemployment Insurance Program initiative. The initiative collects UI debt from federal income tax refunds due to fraud or a person’s failure to report wages while collecting unemployment benefits.
Unemployment Rate Little Changed at 7.3 percent as Nonfarm Jobs Increased in October
Nonfarm jobs rose by 204,000 to 136,554,000 in October. Monthly job gains averaged 190,000 per month over the prior 12 months. Since October 2012, nonfarm payroll employment has increased by 2,329,000 jobs, representing a 12-month growth rate of 1.7 percent.
Statistical Agencies to Host Symposium at BLS
Several U.S. agencies organized an outreach event called the "Symposium of the U.S. Statistical Agencies" to celebrate the International Year of Statistics 2013.
Unemployment Insurance Initial Claims Decrease, Continued Claims Decrease as well
The U.S. Department of Labor reported for the week ending November2, 2013, seasonally adjusted unemployment insurance initial claims decreased from the previous week’s revised figure.
Senate, House Schedules for 2014 Nearly Identical
Senate and House schedules for 2014 will nearly match, according to the Senate Schedule released Thursday by Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-IL).
